Pulling Defeat From The Jaws Of Victory

A recent Gallop Poll shows John McCain leading Barack Obama by four points.

How can this be? With an incumbent Republican president that 70% of the people think is doing a bad job, how can someone from his party be ahead by four points in the polls?

Commentators attribute this to a post convention bounce. The addition of Sarah Palin is the cause of the McCain bounce some claim.

What I see is an election the democrats are botching badly. If any party can pull defeat from the jaws of electoral victory, it is the American Democratic Party.

Their first mistake was choosing Barack Obama. This was a mistake that democrats collectively made. While Obama is a great orator, he is lacking experience and his stances are far to the left of the general population..for example his support for the murder of children who survive a partial birth abortion. Obama would have made a great vice president, but at the top of the ticket he is a liability.

The Democrats second mistake was selecting Joe Biden as their vice president. This was Obama's mistake, as well as the party for not putting pressure on him to accept Hillary Clinton as his running mate. While I'm sure Obama had no desire to see Bill and Hill roaming the white house once again, ditching Hillary opened up the female flank on the Obama campaign.

The democrats third mistake is their savaging of Sarah Palin in the media. While Barack and Biden remain mostly above the fray, their surrogates in the media and the blogosphere have launched vicious attacks against the Palin family. Attacking a 17 year old girl, or saying Sarah Palin is a bad mother because her daughter got pregnant is simply not the best strategy for winning over independent voters.

So why are the democrats engaging in this failing strategy? It is because they're irate over the ideological divide between themselves and Palin. While McCain is a moderate Republican, Sarah Palin is everything liberals hate wrapped up in an attractive package. She's Pro-Life, Pro-Guns, Pro-Religion and from a small town.

You can almost feel the heat from the democrats hatred of her while they state the same talking points over and over

"She's just a Mayor from a small town!"

But this just reminds people of Obama's statement about small town people "Clinging to Guns and Religion".

"She doesn't have the experience to do the job! She's only been Governor for two years!"

But this just reminds people that Obama hasn't been in the Senate very long, let alone governor.

"She should stay home and take care of her special needs child!"

Of course, this sounds like sexism, which will not help the Democrats cause.

Sarah Palin has a 58% approval rating, which is the higher than Obama, McCain and Biden. The more the Democrats make this election about her, the higher the chance they will lose it. The way to the white house for the democrats is not bashing a 44 year old mother of five, the proper path is to simply point out how bad things have been under Bush.

All they have to do is trot out the headlines every week:

Instability in Russia/Georgia.

Fannie and Freddie Nationalized.

National Debt At Record Levels.

15 Dead From Carbomb in Iraq.

Instead of doing simple things like this, the democrats are preoccupied with Palin. As if they're going to suddenly convince the country the Republicans shouldn't win the white house because Sarah Palin's daughter got knocked up at 17.

As many of you know, I'm not a democrat. I don't like their party or their platform. However it is unhealthy for our country to have only one viable party in national politics. So kindly, if you're a democrat get your head in the game.

Wow, hope you're trolling.
I'm apolitical and I'm smarter than that.

I'm going to take the bait and actually respond. I do this despite the fact that after skimming over some of your previous political blogs, I sincerely doubt we agree on much of anything politically =) However, you claim to actually listen to those with opposite opinions, so I hope you hold up to that.

First, let me preface by saying that I was a staunch supporter of Hillary throughout the primaries, precisely because of some of the issues you bring up with Obama: namely that he is a lot of talk and not much experience. That being said, I think he has put a little more substance behind his words of late.

What really makes me irate with the American populace right now is their complete blindness to facts. Now I'm talking about -both- parties here, since I think they both do it (however, being biased towards Democrats I think they do it less =). For instance, let's look at McCain's ads and speeches where he claims that Obama wants to raise everyone's taxes more than himself. I just read in the newspaper this morning (Seattle Post-Intelligencer) of an independent agency which compared the McCain and Obama tax plans, and found that Americans making under $250,000 a year would actually pay MORE taxes in McCain's plan, while those making over $250,000 a year would pay significantly LESS. Yet if you ask your average Republican (especially an Economic Republican), they will claim that McCain's tax plan is better for them. I just cannot understand this blatant disregard for fact - "If da TV says it, it must be true!"

Finally, this whole Sarah Palin scenario is such a joke (on both sides). The Democrats are making huge deals out of relatively inane issues, while overlooking the blatantly obvious ones. First, I don't see how McCain can say absolutely anything about lack of experience when he chooses someone with 2 years of experience as Governor of one of the least populated states in the country. I mean, considering McCain's age and health, how are people not seeing that he is so obviously pandering with this choice? Did he choose the person most qualified for the job of president? No. And this become even more important since the likelihood of her becoming president is extremely high. I mean, if he's going to play the female card, at least choose someone -qualified-, like the numerous female Republican senators of that Ebay CEO I heard was on his short list. Instead he picks the ultra-conservative, quasi-attractive one, and people lap up his pandering. I find it disgusting, personally.

As a closing thought, I'd like to post a link to this video: http://www.comedycentral.com/videos/index.jhtml?videoId=184086 Regardless of how you feel about John Stewart, just look at the actual footage they show . How is it that they can flip-flop their stance on these issues so quickly, and everyone just eats it up? Frankly, I'm a bit disgusted with Democracy at the moment.

Oh man, leave it to the dems to botch a sure thing. Like I said in your last gr blog about her, there's no way republicans are losing this election now. And it's not because they've got the better ticket.

Oh and sup Vir! Gonna be visiting this pretty frequently.

Hardcore liberals hold a special hatred in their heart for people who they see as demographic traitors. Just look at how they treat conservative women and conservative blacks. And, god forbid if you are a conservative black woman.

The Dem's will lose, ultimately, because of their liberal policies.

Everything else that is going on is just a display of those liberal ideals, and the longer it goes on the more voters will come to understand that they really don't want these far left politicians in postions of power.

They just keep being.. well.. themselves. That's all it takes for liberals to lose elections. The other option is to keep up a facade, that never works either.

Solid blog, I hope McCain wins by a landslide so the Democratic party has a reason to pull their heads out of their collective asses.

Basically... just like how Kerry was the only man in America that could possibly lose to Bush.

Still, Kerry would have won if it wasn't for the all the slander that came out about his "alleged" military service. Sigh, ignorant Americans.

"murder of children who survive a partial birth abortion."

You kidding me? You would rather have it survive to live a life with server disabilities, not be able to function in the world? That's worst, thats forcing that child into a life of suffering.

I support Abortion in all instances, for any reason. Pro-Choice all the way... funny how conservatives claim they are Pro-life, yet they are the party killing hundreds of thousands of people world wide, through sanctions and wars, and not interviewing in genocides. Also its the conservatives that are in favor of killing wildlife and destroying the environment.

Seems to me you support a party that supports Death and Destruction, and letting un-wanted children lives of pure physical and mental suffering.

The majority of people supporting McCain have not one clue about the policies he is going to put to work if he were to win (like thats gonna happen)

They think, oh hes an old white guy who was in the vietname war. GI JOE! WAR HERO woot! Yeah man we need this tough dude to keep the terrorists at bay. Dumbshits...

They don't care that they will be taxed more, while Trillion $ Oil companies get tax breaks.

They don't care that the conservative party is stuck in the stone-age with their Jesus-Freak talk, anti-minority, anti-women, anti-gay mentality.

They don't care that the environment is going to shit cause of America's dependence on oil. In fact as you guys could see if you watched the GOP convention. Hundreds of hick red-necks shouting OIL! Drill baby Drill! That was Stupid America... the America everyone hates, the Conservatives fuck up the world and the lives of its citizens that can't afford health care cause of a corrupt privatized health care system.

Do you guys even know what Liberal means? Look up the definition, Liberal = America, Conservatism = Nazism/Fascism

Hey Starfeeder - do you think companies will pay taxes if the government increases them?

Big companies don't pay taxes at all. They simply pass that added cost on to YOU, the consumer.

Raise taxes on big companies, they simply raise the price of their products - thus hurting the consumer, and the economy.

Wake the fuck up you idiot. Why is this so hard to see? Why can't people get that shit through their fucking heads?

BIG COMPANIES DON'T PAY TAXES - NEVER HAVE - NEVER WILL.

A tax hike on companies is a tax hike on YOU.

In response to anonymous -

"BIG COMPANIES DON'T PAY TAXES - NEVER HAVE - NEVER WILL."

This may be true but its irrelevant. They intend to increase taxes from the rich and lower taxes for the poor. This is not to say that they will increase taxes on corporations.

Besides, if prices on products increase, there are alternate venues and those venues' prices will likely decrease. An increase in competition will decrease their price all around. In other words, by helping out the little business compete with the corporation, not only will that promote a better economy - it will promote small business growth. And small business growth is ultimately great for local communities. As it provides more jobs. If there are more jobs, unemployment will drop. If unemployment drops, more currency will be invested by the people. With that, there will be more expendable income. With more expendable income, more products will be purchased. With more purchased products, demand will rise. When demand rises, the price of products will increase anyway. So taxing big business, promotes small business which helps the community. Are you against that?

Obama's policies would put a major hurt on small business. Read this non-bias comparison chart. http://www.sbecouncil.org/uploads/Candidate%20Side%20by%20Side%20Aug%2025%20final%5B1%5D.pdf

This is a flat out lie. I'm not sure if you just made it up, or you're simply misled.

Both candidates support tax cuts. McCain supports cuts across the board. So if you're making $10,000 or you're making $100,000,000 you'd get a tax cut under McCain.

Obama supports tax increases for those making over 227k.

So while Obama's plan is more 'progressive', it's a lie to say McCain's plan wouldn't cut taxes for everyone. It's a flat tax cut.

You can argue about which method will bring in more revenue for the federal government, but it's largely a shell game where minimal changes will be made to our current tax system.

Yet if you ask your average Republican (especially an Economic Republican), they will claim that McCain's tax plan is better for them. I just cannot understand this blatant disregard for fact - "If da TV says it, it must be true!"

Well, you believed that McCain's tax plan would cost middle class people more in taxes because you read it somewhere. Maybe you should rethink how easily you believe something before you attack others for what they believe.

Healthcare in America was fine before the government got into it in the first place. You do realize that HMO's have gotten to the point they have because the government forces employers to give health insurance, right?
